Country Garden, once seen as one of China’s most stable property developers, is now struggling financially, leaving the future of unfinished megadevelopments like Malaysia’s Forest City in doubt. Here’s how overbuilding, and a streak of bad luck, have left China’s real-estate developers in the red. Photo: Adam AdadaChinese Premier Li Qiang gave global business elites a big hint on highly anticipated growth figures, as he sought to reassure them that investing in China is an opportunity—not a risk. Li delivered the message in an address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, as Chinese leaders seek to stem an exodus of foreign investment with growth slowing and relations deteriorating with the U.S.-led West.

China’s Economy Faces a Sour End to the Year

China’s slowing economy could soon become a major talking point for U.S. companies as they begin to report third-quarter earnings. WSJ’s Dion Rabouin explains. Illustration: Elizabeth Smelov<br>SINGAPORE—A brief rebound in China’s struggling economy showed worrying new signs of flickering out, heaping pressure on Beijing to take bolder steps to rev up growth. Factory activity slid deeper into contraction in November as domestic and foreign orders dried up, while, in an ominous sign for consumer spending, activity in the services sector shrank for the first time this year, according to business surveys released Thursday. Only construction registered any expansion compared with the previous month as government spending on infrastructure increased.

U.S. Subsidies Fuel Boom in Global Auto Trade

Chinese-made cars await export at the port of Yantai, Shandong province. China’s auto exports were up 71% in the third quarter compared with average monthly exports in 2021. Photo: Cfoto/Zuma PressSINGAPORE—Auto exports from Europe and Asia are surging as the U.S. and other countries lavish subsidies on electric vehicles and dealers replenish inventories that even now aren’t back to prepandemic levels. The boom in autos contrasts with broader weakness in exports as the global economy slows. The trend offers a glimpse of how the West’s embrace of industrial policies aimed at stimulating domestic manufacturing and reducing the use of fossil fuels is causing wrinkles in patterns of world trade.

Beijing’s chilly relations with the West have pushed global companies to rethink their exposure to China. Photo: wang zhao/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesSINGAPORE—For years, foreign companies plowed the profits they made in China back into China, using the cash to finance new hiring and investment as its giant economy expanded rapidly. Now, as growth slows and tensions between Beijing and Washington rise, they are pulling those profits out.

China passed a significant milestone last fall: For the first time since its economic opening more than four decades ago, it traded more with developing countries than the U.S., Europe and Japan combined. It was one of the clearest signs yet that China and the West are going in different directions as tensions increase over trade, technology, security and other thorny issues. For decades, the U.S. and other Western countries sought to make China both a partner and a customer in a single global economy led by the richest nations. Now trade and investment flows are settling into new patterns built around the two competing power centers.

Workers at a factory in Nantong, in China’s eastern Jiangsu province. Photo: str/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesSINGAPORE—China’s economy suffered a setback as surveys showed factory orders shrank and construction activity slowed, reigniting growth concerns just as activity appeared to be stabilizing. The closely watched surveys show the world’s second-largest economy isn’t out of the woods as it contends with challenges including a slowdown in growth overseas and a drawn-out property bust at home.
